Saving Water Starts at Home
Published on April 14, 2025
April is Water Conservation Month — and for good reason.
April is typically one of the driest months of the year, and it’s when water demand reaches its peak.
This month, join us in protecting Florida’s water resources by taking small steps that make a big impact. Here are 10 easy ways to save water inside and outside your home:
Indoors:
- Only run full loads in your washer and dishwasher.
- Use shorter wash cycles for lightly soiled laundry.
- Thaw food in the refrigerator or microwave — not under running water.
- Scrape dishes instead of rinsing before loading the dishwasher.
- Install high-efficiency showerheads, faucets and toilets.
Outdoors:
- Check your home’s irrigation system for leaks (see bonus tip below).
- Turn off your irrigation system and only water as needed.
- Don’t leave sprinklers unattended. Use a timer or alarm to remind yourself to turn them off.
- Use a hose with a shut-off nozzle when washing your car.
- Consider installing a rain barrel with a drip irrigation system for watering your landscaping. Rainwater is free and better for your plants because it doesn’t contain hard minerals.
