Rodent Control Tips
Rodent infestation can cause damage to private property. By combining the below strategies and staying proactive, you may deter rodents from your property without resorting to pesticides.
NOTE: While Clearwater Code Compliance cannot address rodents on private properties, complaints regarding overgrown vegetation, which may attract rodents, can be filed here.
Remove food sources
Rodents are attracted to food, so ensure all food items are stored in airtight containers. Secure garbage cans with tight-fitting lids, and avoid leaving pet food outside.
Trim vegetation
Keep trees and shrubs trimmed away from your home. Overhanging branches can provide easy access to your roof for rodents. NOTE: The city does not prune palm trees in the right-of-way, and residents are encouraged to remove dead leaves, branches, palm fronds and seed pods. Take care while removing dates and seed pods as they are a food source for rodents.
Clean yard debris
Rodents seek shelter in cluttered areas. Keep your yard clean by removing debris, piles of wood, and tall grass where rodents might nest.
Use natural repellents
Peppermint oil, eucalyptus, lemon, citronella or equal parts ammonia and vinegar can be used: soak cotton balls and place them around areas where rodents might enter. Rodents dislike the strong scent.
Mothballs
Place mothballs in areas frequented by rodents. Be cautious as these can be toxic to pets and children.
Spread spices, coffee grounds, Etc.
Sprinkle cayenne pepper, garlic, onion, or coffee grounds around entry points and areas where rodents are active. The strong smell and taste can deter them.
Natural predators
Encourage natural predators like owls, hawks, and snakes by providing nesting boxes or creating habitats that attract them to your property.
Use traps
Employ non-toxic traps like snap traps or live traps baited with peanut butter or cheese. Check traps regularly and release live-caught rodents far away from your property.
Seal entry points
Rodents can squeeze through tiny openings. Inspect your property for cracks, gaps, and holes, especially around doors, windows, pipes, and vents. Seal these openings with wire mesh, steel wool, or caulk.
Ultrasonic devices
Consider using ultrasonic repellent devices that emit high-frequency sound waves to deter rodents. While effectiveness varies, some people find them helpful.
Regular maintenance
Keep up with regular maintenance to ensure a rodent-free environment. Regularly inspect your property for signs of infestation and act promptly if you spot any.
Professional help
If the rodent infestation persists despite your efforts, consider consulting with a pest control professional who specializes in eco-friendly or natural pest control methods.
