Homelessness and Homeless Prevention
Homelessness is a social and economic issue that affects everyone - children, families, social service providers, government agencies, and society at large. The city of Clearwater supports local social service providers who address the root causes of homelessness. The city contributes to the following Continuum of Care providers in Pinellas County: HEP – Homeless Empowerment Program, Hope Villages of America (formerly RCS), The Salvation Army of Clearwater & Upper Pinellas County, Pinellas Hope and Pinellas County Safe Harbor.
The city also contributes to the Pinellas County Homeless Leadership Alliance, which is the leadership organization working closely with local service providers to end homelessness in Pinellas County.
The city has initiated and maintains a comprehensive, holistic approach and has formed a Homeless Committee that consists of directors and staff who frequently address the needs and impact of the homeless population.
HOW YOU CAN YOU HELP: GIVE A HAND UP, NOT A HAND OUT
Street feeding without comprehensive services enables homeless persons to sustain their lifestyle on the street and does not address drug/alcohol addictions, mental health issues, and other chronic conditions that contribute to homelessness.
Handing money and food are enabling behaviors. Instead, please redirect your generosity to homeless programs that provide sanitary meals, housing, medical assistance, job referrals and other professional services to homeless individuals and/or families with children.
Supporting local social service providers is the best way to help and potentially offer a real-life change to someone in need. Please redirect your donations to one of our local partners. If you wish to volunteer, contact your nearest service provider.
