Spirit of the American Doughboy

Location: Memorial Causeway Median, 354 Pierce Blvd

"Spirit of the American Doughboy" was rededicated at the eastern end of the Memorial Causeway Bridge. The Spirit of the American Doughboy, along with the Spirit of the American Navy, was created to honor those who fought to preserve our country's freedom in World War I. These statues were first dedicated Nov. 11, 1927, to mark the opening of the original Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Causeway Bridge. The statues were restored by sculptor Frank Colson and his son.

About the artist: Frank Colson was known for sculpture in clay, bronze and mixed media. His signature pieces include flat, mask-like wall pieces and metamorphic representational animals. At Scripps College, Colson studied with Paul Soldner and Richard Petterson.
